App crashed for no reason

I was right in the middle of composing a C++ program, having two functions completely written, when the app crashed for no apparent reason. (I was only typing, not performing any operations [compile, run, etc.]).

This app should have methods in place to save the programmers work so catastrophic data losses are not possible. How about an "auto save" feature?
